IPL 2019: The Captain Is As Good As The Team: Bhuvneshwar Kumar

After starting his captaincy stint for Sunrisers Hyderabad on a losing note, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has finally started showing good signs. In the last two games, he has led Sunrisers to two thumping wins. On Thursday, the last year’s finalists thrashed Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets to register their third win on the trot and move to the top of the table. Almost everything went right for Bhuvneshwar Kumar and his men right from the time he won the toss and invited Delhi to have a go with the bat.

The Shreyas Iyer-led side could manage to score just 129 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. Asked to bat first, Delhi never looked like putting up a good total. They lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually restricted to a paltry total.

Prithvi Shaw started off well by hitting two boundaries before Bhuvneshwar sent him back.

Shikhar Dhawan’s lean patch continued as he too departed cheaply, leaving Delhi Capitals reeling at 36 for 2. Captain Shreyas Iyer held firm from one end, scoring 43 but found little support from the other end. Towards the end,  Chris Morris (17) and Axar Patel (23*) came up with handy cameos to guide Delhi to a respectable total.

In reply, Jonny Bairstow and David Warner added 64 runs for the first wicket inside 7 overs to all but seal Delhi’s fate. The Sunrisers then lost five wickets in quick time but eventually chased down the total with more than an over remaining.

Speaking at the end of the game, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was all praise for his teammates and also gave an update on regular skipper Kane Williamson.

“It is always easy as the captain when the team does well and I always believe that the captain is as good as the team. We weren’t sure at the toss about how the pitch would play, but we always wanted to bowl given how small the ground is. We knew that it would be easier in the second innings and it would be a tricky chase,” he said.

“But the start we got was great. In the second half of the IPL the wickets would be slow and turning all over India and spin would play a big part because of which we need to be choosy with the team selection. Kane is almost there, but we want him to take as much time as he wants,” he added.
