Aakash Chopra, the former India cricketer-turned-commentator, has been left baffled with the decision made by Shreyas Iyer in Delhi Capital’s loss against Kolkata Knight Riders by 59 runs on Saturday.

The capital franchise had a good start with the ball as KKR were reduced to 42/3. But then, Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine launched a counter-attack and the Delhi bowlers were found tottering for a wicket in the middle overs. Chasing 195, Delhi lost both their openers to Pat Cummins. Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer steadied the chase with a partnership before Varun Chakravarthy spun a web around DC’s batting order.

There is a huge question mark on Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra has criticized Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy post their loss on Saturday. The former opener is befuddled by few tactics used by the Delhi skipper. In a video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Chopra talked about Tushar Deshpande bowling his full quota of four overs, even though he was getting expensive for two straight matches, even when there is a sixth bowling option. He was shocked as Axar Patel just bowled one-over and has been successful economy-wise versus left-handers this season.

Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel said, “So, here there is a huge question mark on Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. Now it has happened in two consecutive matches, Tushar Deshpande bowls his full quota of overs and gives 40 runs in his four overs, similar thing happened in the last match.”

“This time Axar bowled just the one over in which he conceded 7 runs. Please don’t tell me that there were two left-handers in front of him because he has an economy of 6.5 per over against left-handers this year. So will a left-arm spinner not bowl against left-handed batsman?”

“I am slightly surprised with Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy errors in consecutive matches. I never thought I will say that this season because in general, his captaincy has been very good”, he said.

That is not the kind of Pant innings we know: Aakash Chopra

He also lamented on Rishabh Pant’s failures this season. He said that Pant is misfiring because the team has hopes from him. The 43-year-old feels Pant is shying away from hitting the ball- that is not the kind of Rishabh Pant we know.

“Pant is misfiring because you have hopes from him. There was a partnership between Iyer and Pant where Iyer was trying but Pant was not seen hitting at all. It seemed his form is far away from him. That is not the kind of Pant innings we know. His strike rate has not been good this year. His average might be alright but his ability to hit is not coming to the fore and if that happens, it will not work out”, he added.
