Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), on Monday, announced Australia spinner Adam Zampa has replaced his compatriot Kane Richardson in the squad for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The franchise took to Twitter to confirm the news. The pacer has pulled out of IPL 2020 as he is expecting the birth of his first child. Richardson, who made his IPL debut in 2013, last played in the tournament in 2016 when he represented the Bangalore-based franchise only.

Before playing for RCB, he had also played for now-defunct Pune Warriors and Rajasthan Royals. Richardson is a part of Australia’s squads for the upcoming T20I and ODI series in England. RCB had secured his services in the last players’ auction for INR 4 crore.

As far as Adam Zampa is concerned, he is not new to playing in IPL either. The leg-spinner, who went unsold in the last three IPL auctions, last played in IPL in 2017 for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant. And he had made a big impression at that time when he took 6 wickets for 19 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It is the third best performance by a bowler in the history of IPL.

More matured and experienced now, Adam Zampa will be looking to make his mark in IPL 2020. With the tournament being played in UAE, the slow pitches will aid him too. With the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Moeen Ali in the squad, Adam Zampa’s addition has further bolstered RCB’s spin attack.

Royal Challengers Bangalore are eyeing their first-ever IPL title. They have made it to the final of the competition thrice – 2009, 2011 and 2016 – but ended up on the wrong side of the result on every occasion. Their performance in the last few years has been a lot worse.

Since making it to the final in 2016, they have not managed to make it past the league stage. In last three seasons, they have finished at the bottom twice while on the other occasion, they finished at a lowly sixth spot in the eight-team competition. IPL 2020 is scheduled to start on September 19 while the final is on November 10.
