Chennai Super Kings, on Sunday, played the role of party poopers to perfection as they dashed Kings XI Punjab’s hopes of making it to the playoffs. The three-time champions, who were already out of the playoffs race, thrashed KXIP by nine wickets to dump them out of IPL 2020.

What promised to be an exciting contest turned out to be a one-sided affair in the end as Chennai Super Kings made light work of KXIP. Right from the toss till the winning runs, almost everything fell in place for the MS Dhoni-led side.

Asked to bat first, KXIP finished their innings on 153 for 6. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal gave them a solid start by adding 48 runs for the first wicket before both of them departed in quick succession.

The Punjab-based outfit lost Nicholas Pooran and Chris Gayle cheaply too and found themselves four down for 72 in the 12th over. Runs were hard to come by and it looked like they might finish well below 150. However, Deepak Hooda’s unbeaten knock of 62 from just 30 balls helped Punjab put up a challenging total.

In reply, Chennai Super Kings chased down the total in the 19th over by losing just one wicket. In-form Ruturaj Gaikwad starred with the bat by scoring his third consecutive fifty. He remained unbeaten on 62 and shared 82 and 72-run stands with Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu respectively.

Chennai Super Kings’ favour to other teams:

Soon after the game ended, Chennai Super Kings posted a hilarious tweet on their official Twitter handle. They dedicated the win not only to their fans but also to the other teams who are still in contention for a playoff spot.

As many as five teams are still in race for the last three playoff spot and Chennai Super Kings has responded hilariously after doing them a favour.

“One for the Super Fans…

…and RCB, DC, SRH, RR and KKR,” wrote the franchise.
