Former India women’s team captain, Anjum Chopra has opined on CSK captain, MS Dhoni, and his future with the franchise ahead of CSK’s clash with KKR on Thursday.
Chennai is currently at the bottom of the points table and is out of contention for a spot in the playoffs. It is for the first time in the history of IPL that CSK will not be in the top four teams at the end of the league stage. Hence there have been several speculations about MS Dhoni’s future with CSK going around.
Just because one season hasn’t worked for the team collectively, that doesn’t mean the leader is bad: Anjum Chopra
Anjum Chopra, the cricketer-turned-commentator says that Dhoni should be the centre of CSK’s plans for the next couple of years. She believes that just because CSK has had one disappointing season as a team, that doesn’t make Dhoni a bad leader.
She said that MS Dhoni is a vastly experienced player and he knows what the challenges lying ahead are. The 43-year-old commentator also said that Dhoni wouldn’t have won so many titles if he didn’t know what he was doing.
Talking with indiatoday.in, Anjum Chopra said, “I think he should be (at the center of CSK for the next couple of years). And why not? He is probably the only player who has never been to an auction and he has been a marquee player as well. He deserves to be there as well. Just because one season hasn’t worked for the team collectively, that doesn’t mean the leader is bad.”
“MS Dhoni is too experienced and too good a player… he has been match-winner. He knows what are the challenges and what are the things that they need to do from hereon. He wouldn’t have won all those titles, if he didn’t know what he was doing. I don’t think, just because one season hasn’t gone in their favour, it should really make a big difference,” she added.
Anjum Chopra said that MS Dhoni should be at the helm of the things in the future as CSK should look to revamp their squad before next season. Plenty of chopping and changing needs to be done for CSK to get the desired results. Also, Chopra said they need to be shrewd in picking players in the auction having the future insight as well.
“But yes, going forward, MS Dhoni also would be knowing exactly how to revamp this team and change things around so that they start getting results they so desire. I am sure they will be looking to maybe revamping or changing and chopping around. Also, another very important factor is whom are they going to pick? It’s not that everybody is going to lend all their players,” Chopra said.
