Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul has reacted to Mayank Agarwal’s performance in their close loss to Delhi Capitals in the second match of IPL 2020. Agarwal played one of his best knocks in IPL but failed to take the team over the line.

Chasing 158, Kings XI Punjab were off to a disastrous start. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and found them reeling at 55 for 5 at one stage. At that time, the game looked as good as over for them as KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan and Glenn Maxwell were already back in the hut.

However, Agarwal held from one end and played a stunner to keep his team in the hunt. He combined with K Gowtham for a 46-run stand that raised his side’s hopes. The India Test opener reached his fifty off 45 balls with the first of the two sixes he hit off Mohit Sharma in the 18th over.

The equation was finally down to 13 runs off the last over bowled by Marcus Stoinis. Agarwal started in the best possible fashion by dispatching the first ball for a six. The next two balls were hit for a couple and a four. With 1 run needed off the last three balls, the stage was set for Agarwal to finish the night on a good note for himself as well as for his side.

However, he failed to do so and was out on the fifth ball before Chris Jordan followed suit as the match went to super over. In the super over, Kings XI Punjab managed just two runs and ended up losing the game.

KL Rahul’s reaction:

Agarwal scored 89 off 60 balls with the help of seven fours and four sixes. But he is facing criticism from several quarters for his failure to close the game. However, his captain KL Rahul sounded delighted with his performance as he lavished praise on his Karnataka teammate after the game.

KL Rahul said that Agarwal was unbelievable and hailed his performance as magical. The Kings XI captain also stated that he would take the result and decided against pinpointing at any particular reason behind the loss.

“He (Agarwal) was unbelievable and to get a game that close was magical. He’s been doing well in Tests and to get the game that close again brings a lot of confidence in the group,” said Rahul.

“Like I said at the toss, we didn’t know what to expect. The wicket remains the same for both teams, so can’t really complain. I will gladly take it as a captain whatever the result is. We stuck to what we planned but we did make a few mistakes. At 55 for five, we were calm and still positive,” he added.
