The thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to come to a conclusion. Not very long ago, the chances of seeing the tournament taking place this year was looking absolutely bleak. But thanks to BCCI, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and others involved, the tournament has taken place in a smooth manner in the UAE.

Two more games are left in the IPL 2020. SunRisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals will lock horns against each other in the second Qualifier on Sunday and the winner of this contest will take on Mumbai Indians in the final. The title-decider is scheduled to take place on November 10.

The Prize money:

Due to the extraordinary circumstances this year, the teams won’t get the same amount that they pocketed last year. The prize money has been substantially slashed by the BCCI this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this year in March, the BCCI  had implemented strict cost cutting measures with the notable decision being IPL champions’ prize money.

In a circular sent to all IPL franchises, the BCCI notified that the prize money will be reduced by half this year. Consequently, the winner of IPL 2020 will receive Rs 10 crore instead of Rs 20 crore. On the other hand, the runners-up will receive Rs 6.35 crore instead of 12.50 crore.

“The financial rewards have been reworked as a part of the cost cutting measures. The champions will get Rs 10 crore instead of Rs 20 crore. The runners-up will get Rs 6.25 crore from earlier Rs 12.5 crore,” a BCCI notification read.

It should be noted that as many as three players were sold for more than Rs 10 crore in the last auction and they would take home more money than the IPL winner. Pat Cummins has received Rs 15.5 crores while Glenn Maxwell and Chris Morris have received Rs 10.75 crore and Rs 10 crore respectively this season.

The two losing qualifiers, nonetheless, will now get Rs 4.375 crore each. The BCCI is yet to announce the prize money for the Orange Cap (most runs) holder, the Purple Cap (most wickets) holder, the emerging player but it won’t be surprising if that amount is reduced too. Last year, the individual winners were rewarded handsomely too.

The Orange Cap winner and the Purple Cap winner earned Rs 10 lakh each last year. The Emerging player went home with Rs 10 lakh in 2019. The most valuable player of the season award-winner received Rs 10 lakh as well.
