The year 2020 has been full of uncertainties as tragedies hit the world alike with the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic. However with out of very few positives to pick up from IPL has been a success story this year. And the result for the cricket board and official broadcasters came after a patient wait.

IPL 2020 was originally slated to get underway in March. But it was later deferred from its original date before being postponed indefinitely. The final decision on IPL being moved to UAE came after the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia was postponed which allowed the lucrative tournament to take up the slot.

IPL is the best tournament in the world: Sourav Ganguly

IPL 2020 has seen a lot of breathtaking moments which includes more than one Super Over in a day, consecutive centuries being scored, big totals been chased down. BCCI president Ganguly said that these moments define the tournament and the IPL has been a smashing hit in the year 2020.

“Unbelievable, and I am not surprised at all. When we were discussing with Star and all the people concerned – if we have to do it this year and one-month prior to the tournament, we were contemplating, whether this can happen or not, what will be the ultimate result of the bio-bubble and will it be successful. We decided to move ahead with our plan, because we wanted to bring normalcy in everyone’s lives and wanted to bring the game back. I am not surprised with the feedback,” Ganguly said on Star Sports’ show Cricket Live.

“This is the best tournament in the world,” he said. “There have been so many super overs, we recently witnessed a double super over, we saw Shikhar Dhawan’s batting, we saw Rohit Sharma, we saw all the young players and we witnessed the comeback of KL Rahul’s KXIP from the bottom of the table. You will get everything here! I can bet you that the IPL has been a smashing success this year, in terms of the ratings, the number of people who have watched the game.”

IPL 2020 will be played entirely in UAE due to the pandemic situation forcing the cricket board to host the tournament away from India. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah will be the three venues used for the tournament. Dream 11 have been named as the sponsor for the upcoming season of the tournament after VIVO pulled out.
