IPL To Have More Day-Night Games From Next Season

The next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to get longer as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pondering to organise more day-night matches. The apex body is also considering a plan where one side will play only one day-match in the entire IPL and as fewer games as possible in the weekends.

Meanwhile, the biggest franchise-based sporting event in cricket has a 60-day period and accordingly BCCI will propose a schedule before the new IPL Governing Council. The next edition of the tournament is likely to start from April 1 and run until May 30.

The franchises will be intimated when the Governing Council meet the team owners in the next few months. BCCI is also mulling over a 7:00 PM start and will talk with franchises. Previously, Mumbai Indians have expressed their reservation over this timing. They have argued that their crowds come post office hours so a 7:00 PM start will be difficult to pull more spectators.

The timing has been an issue since long as it becomes difficult to avail transport after the match ends. Many centres don’t have any public transport available post-night IPL games.

“There is a plan in place of playing more games at night. If it is passed, each team will have to play only one game in the afternoon. Teams who play in the north face heat waves and conditions get more difficult. There is a plan of using all 60 days instead of wrapping up the IPL in 45 days. The IPL GC has to approve it,” source informed.

It is likely that the opening ceremony of the next IPL will not take place on the same day as that of the first match. BCCI has offered Cricket Club of India (CCI) to host the opening ceremony.
