Jason Roy, one of the leading white-ball batsmen of the modern era, had revealed that England’s 31-run victory against India breathed life in their 2019 World Cup campaign.

England, who had come into the tournament as massive favorites, suffered a mid-stage wobble following defeats to Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka, leaving them desperate for a win against India and New Zealand in their last two group-stage encounters.

Jason Roy, who did not feature in two of these defeats against Australia and Sri Lanka due to injury, made his comeback against the Men in Blue at Edgbaston, said that the victory against India relaxed everyone in the camp, which resulted in them playing their natural game.

“That brought life back into the team a little bit. We had our full team back, we won that game and everyone got to relax a little bit, we started playing the way we normally play. That was a weird moment as everyone had to come together, attended team meetings where we discussed our fears. That’s when we played our best cricket,” Jason Roy told CricTracker.

“In a lot of series, we lost the opening matches. We tried to be as aggressive and positive as we could. And that starts in the morning when we had breakfast and turn up to the ground. And we ended up playing some incredible cricket again. After we won, we realised that’s how we should play,” Jason Roy recalled.

Coming back to the game, the opening pair of Jason Roy [66] and Jonny Bairstow [111] were instrumental in setting the tone early in the fixture.

The duo smashed the Indian bowlers- especially its spinners- to the tune of 160 in a mere 22 overs. England eventually posted 7-337 in 50 overs, a target which despite a hundred from Rohit Sharma proved just a bit too much for the Indians.

England eventually won the game by 31 runs and went on to beat New Zealand, Australia [semi-finals] before once again beating the Kiwis, albeit on boundary count rule, in the finals to lift their maiden World Cup trophy.
