The rapid proliferation of the World Health Organisation-declared pandemic that is the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused havoc in the entire world. The virus that emerged from the Wuhan city of China late last year has claimed more than 75,000 lives globally besides inflecting more than a million people.

With the entire world locked up, the sporting arena has been hit the hardest with almost every marquee event including Olympics, Premier League, La Liga, NBA and many others getting postponed.

As far as cricket is concerned, its marquee franchise event, the Indian Premier League has also found itself in hot waters. The 13th edition of the tournament was scheduled to start from March 29 but with the steadily escalating situation and the change in visa policies by the Indian government, the Sourav Ganguly-led Board of Control for Cricket in India [BCCI] was forced to postpone the cash-rich league till April 15.

But with the situation not really improving, it is a distant dream that the 13th edition will start anytime soon. And, swashbuckling English wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Butter, who plays for the Rajasthan Royals feels that it is a real shame that tournament of the magnitude of the IPL is not being staged.

“I don’t know any more than you know about when IPL would be played or people talking about whether it can be pushed back. At the moment, everything is quite indefinite as no one knows how long it will last. So it can’t be decided at the moment when it could or could not happen,” Buttler was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Jos Buttler feels that the tournament like the IPL is very important to cricket as the revenue involved in it is massive.

He added: “As for the stature of the tournament, it’s a massive, massive tournament. Revenue that is involved in IPL is massive. It is a very important competition to cricket and it’s a big shame that it’s not going ahead or whether it does have the way to push it in the schedule and allow it,”
