Australia have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the ongoing three-match series of the Trans-Tasman Trophy against New Zealand. The visitors have had very few things going their way, and they further await some bad news ahead of the dead rubber in Sydney. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson and middle-order batsman Henry Nicholls missed out on the training sessions, experiencing symptoms of flu.

As reported, Kane Williamson and Nicholls made their presence felt at the Sydney Cricket Ground for an optional training session. However, the support staff decided to keep them away from the other players and hence were given the day off. Bowling coach Shane Jurgensen remained optimistic that they would be back for the training sessions tomorrow. He hailed them by claiming that they are tough and that taking a day off by coming back tomorrow would keep them in good stead.

“They’re fine, they’re not really feeling good today. They had some flu symptoms, and I’m sure they will be back training tomorrow. They’re pretty tough, so just take a rest today. It’s been a big last two tests, so it’s a good opportunity to have a day off and come back tomorrow.” Jurgensen told the reporters as quoted by India Today.

The tourists lost the first Test by 296 runs in Perth and the second Test in Melbourne by 247 runs. A defeat in Sydney in the third Test may likely witness Australia climb to number two in the ICC Test rankings.

The only positives that New Zealand have derived out of the series are the relentless and tireless spells from Neil Wagner to keep Steven Smith in check. Another one is Tom Blundell, who showed the other batters the path to resistance by scoring a century in the second Test in the fourth innings against a dominant bowling attack.
