In the wake of the poor behaviour from the India and Bangladesh players in the final of the ICC U19 World Cup, former India captains Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin have called for ‘strict action’ to be taken. Both the former players were of the opinion that the BCCI needs to take action against the Indian players to set an example.

Right from the start of the game, Bangladesh players showed needless aggression and tried to get under the skin of the Indian players. As early as in the second over of the match, Tanzim Hasan Sakib picked up the ball and threw it towards Divyansh Saxena after the India opener tapped the ball back to the bowler. It was followed by a bit of staring and mouthing-off before the umpire intervened.

Similarly when Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a well-made 88, bowler Shoriful Islam couldn’t resist giving the batsman an animated send-off. And all hell broke lose at the end of the game as the players were involved in physical altercation. And although the ICC has sanctioned three Bangladesh and two Indian players for their roles in the incident, Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin want the BCCI to take action too.

“I would take action against the errant Under 19 players but I also want to know what role has the support staff played in educating these youngsters. Act now before it is too late. The players have to be disciplined,” Mohammad Azharuddin was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Kapil Dev echoed the same sentiments and called on the BCCI to set an example by punishing the players.

“I would like to see the Board take some strict action against the players to set an example. Cricket is not about abusing the opponent. I am sure there is enough reason for these youngsters to be dealt with firmly by BCCI,” said Kapil.

“I welcome aggression. Nothing wrong in it. But it has to be controlled aggression. You can’t cross the line of decency in the name of being competitive. I would say it was unacceptable that youngsters put up such an obnoxious display on the cricket field,” added Kapil.
