It is fair to say that Indian fast bowling has come by leaps and bounds in the past 6-7 years. That is not to say that we did not quality fast bowlers in the past. Of course not! But, what we always lacked was a group of fast pacers blessed with varied skilled sets, who would be at the opposition batting-unit relentlessly.  The emergence of the likes of Mohammed Shami, the resurgence of Ishant Sharma, the raw pace and reverse swing of Umesh Yadav, and of-course the hostility of Jasprit Bumrah has helped Indian cricket achieved its ultimate dream in the past decade.

The Indian fast-bowling unit-led by the ever-so brilliant, Jasprit Bumrah, is one of the most fearsome attacks of the modern era, and for someone like Kapil Dev, whose success paved the way for the revolution of the pace-bowling factory in this country; someone whose success gave wings of a dream to budding pacers in the county-dominated by batsmen and spinners to take up the thankless art, it is a matter of immense pride when one of the greatest-ever batsmen in the form of Brian Lara says he would have preferred to face Kapil Dev but not Jasprit Bumrah.

Jasprit Bumrah is undoubtedly the leader of the Indian pace-attack currently and, not only Indian cricket, he has impinged himself as one of the best bowlers of the modern era. Mohammed Shami is not too far behind. And, the duo coupled with the ever-improving Ishant Sharma has managed to forge an attack that can take 20 wickets in any conditions without being over-reliant on the spinners, something Kapil Dev is really proud of.

“I read somewhere that Brian Lara said he would rather prefer facing Kapil Dev but not Bumrah. Our fast bowlers are brilliant. Look at Shami, Bumrah. As a cricketer, it gives me a lot of happiness to say that today we depend on our fast bowlers. Our bowlers are capable of taking 20 wickets in a match,” Kapil Dev pointed out during an interaction with Ayaz Menon on Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.

“We’ve had spinners in the past whom we have depended more – Kumble, Harbhajan – but today no country would like to say ‘give them (Indian team) bouncy wickets’.” he added.
