The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad witnessed an animated Team India skipper Virat Kohli lead his side to a six-wicket win against West Indies on December 6. Speaking at the end of the thriller, Caribbeans skipper Kieron Pollard downplayed Kohli theatrics saying that it is part and parcel of his game.

Kohli finished on 94 not out from just 50 balls to stun West Indies after the visitors had looked set for victory. With nine overs left, India were 96/1 and required 112, with the India captain struggling to find his usual tempo. He was on 26 from 23 balls, and West Indies’ attack was not allowing him to cut loose. But in the second half of his knock, Kohli looked flawless making a mockery of West Indies bowlers.

Kieron Pollard downplays Kohli’s animated display

The India captain went under the skin of Kieron Pollard and Kesrick Williams and even let out an imitation of Williams’s notebook celebration from the CPL. Kieron Pollard tried to play mind games by running in and not delivering the ball. That only fuelled Kohli’s fire and he responded with a brilliant six. Eventually, the Indian captain finished with a couple of stylish lofted drives over extra-cover to go 1-0 up in the series.

“He is an animated character, a great batsman, and he continues to show the world that he is a world-class batsman. His theatrics or whatever, it comes as part and parcel of the game. Sometimes you have to be like that to pump yourself to score runs, and so I am fine with it,” Pollard said at the match.

Previously, West Indies banked on significant contributions from Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer and Kieron Pollard to post a massive total on the scoreboard. Hetmyer brought his first fifty well supported by Pollard before Lewis set it up, but it was not enough to seal the game as India walked home convincingly.
