In yet another revealing news about the Indian Premier League, Kings XI Punjab have announced their players’ release list. The franchise has let go some of their stalwarts like David Miller, Sam Curran, Andrew Tye, and Varun Chakravarthy. South African batsman David Miller, who went on to become one of the important players in their set up has also been released.

However, his performance has gone downhill with every passing season. Overall, he has managed 1850 runs but he could scrape to only 213 runs in 10 games at an average of 23.67 in the last edition. The franchise co-owner Ness Wadia said that Miller decided to move on to some other franchise and they decided to grant him his wish.

David has been an iconic player for us. He expressed his desire to move on and we respect his decision. We wish him the very best,” Wadia said as quoted by PTI.

The two other huge releases were England’s fast bowler Sam Curran who got acquired for INR 7.2 crores, and Tamil Nadu spinner Varun Chakravarthy who was one of the most expensive Indian players in the last auction. The off-spinner was bought for INR 8.4 crores.

Varun Chakravarthy failed to pick even a single wicket in the only game he played while Sam Curran bagged a hattrick, but couldn’t do anything extraordinary to justify his price tag. In nine matches, the 21-year old scored 95 runs and picked up ten wickets at a disappointing average of 32.30.

Among the retained players, Punjab refused to let go of Chris Gayle, who went to the franchise in 2018 after going unsold twice during the auction. Wadia addressed Gayle as a champion player and said that there is no way they were going to let go of him.

“There is no way we could have let him go. He is a champion player,” Wadia said.

Earlier, Punjab had traded their captain Ravichandran Ashwin to Delhi Capitals for 1.5 crores, and Karnataka spinner Jagadeesha Suchith. The auction for the next year’s tournament will be held on 19th December in Kolkata.
