KL Rahul will be donning the captain’s hat for the first time in IPL. He will be leading the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) franchise in the upcoming season and there will be plenty of expectations from the Indian opener. More so, because KL Rahul has done well for KXIP in the recent past and has turned out to be a vital cog for the franchise.

India legend Sunil Gavaskar has shown faith in KL Rahul’s ability. He said that the Karnataka batsman can become the vice-captain of Team India if he continues to do well. The little master also added that although there are still players like Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma; KL Rahul remains in the loop to become the future captain of Team India.

“There is a great chance for KL Rahul to show that he can score runs when given the responsibility. Secondly, he can show that he is capable of captaining a side and how he moulds his team and extracts effort. If he does that well he can even go on to become the vice-captain of the Indian team,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

“There are still players in the Indian team like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane. But going forward, he can be an option for the selection committee and can also become India’s future captain. So this can be a huge tournament for KL Rahul as a skipper.”

KL Rahul is also in the reckoning to become the first choice wicket-keeper for India after MS Dhoni called time on his international career. Rishabh Pant was touted to fill in the big boots of MS Dhoni across format. But as he failed to capitalise on the chances he was given with his poor shot selection and questionable glovework, it opened the doors for KL Rahul.

The Karnataka batsman, on the contrary, latched on to the opportunity and made the most of it. KL Rahul was tried to bat at different positions for Team India and he delivered. His glovework was also neat which came as an added bonus for the wicket-keeper batsman.
