ToggleKL Rahul made his Test debut in 2014 and it has been five years since then, the opener has struggled to cement his place in the playing XI. He has struggled for consistency which has earned criticisms from all corners. Former India cricketer VVS Laxman also spoke about the same saying that he needs to perform for India.
The Karnataka opener once again struggled in the recently-concluded Test series against West Indies. Although India won the series convincingly, the form of KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara will keep them on their toes. Rahul returned without a single fifty from the tour with the highest score being 44.

The young opener got starts in both innings of the first Test but has failed to convert those. Rahul hasn’t managed a 50+ score since his 149 against England at Oval 12 innings back. Before that knock, he managed only one half-century in his previous 15 innings.

VVS Laxman opined that KL Rahul needs to start scoring runs for India to retain his place. The former cricketer also called Rishabh Pant and urged him to work on his game and contribute to the team’s performance.
“There were lots of positives for India, but question marks hang over the batting,” Laxman wrote in Times of India. “Cheteshwar Pujara must be disappointed at a modest start to a new season, but the greater concern is over KL Rahul. His ability is never under question, and he is no longer a newcomer to Test cricket. He has got numerous opportunities, but he has often flattered to deceive. India will look for more from him and Rishabh Pant, both with the bat and the gloves, in future,” he added.

Meanwhile, VVS Laxman seemed utterly satisfied with Hanuma Vihari and Jasprit Bumrah. Vihari has been the find of the series for India while Bumrah also did an impeccable job with the ball in hand. The young middle-order batsman finished as the highest run-scorer with 289 runs.
“There is so much to admire about the brand of cricket India played, and no one exemplified it better than Hanuma Vihari with the bat and Jasprit Bumrah with the ball. Vihari has been at home, enhancing his reputation as a Test batsman with every outing. I look forward to greater things from him,” Laxman concluded.
