When Kuldeep Yadav Paid The Price For Not Paying Attention To MS Dhoni's Tips

There are very few who would dare to ignore Mahendra Singh Dhoni‘s tips on a cricket field.  One of the most successful captains of all time, Dhoni is probably the most experienced cricketer in international cricket at the moment. In fact, such is his experience that even current India skipper Virat Kohli makes sure to take his advise before taking a big call on the cricket field.

However, there are always some exception and Kuldeep Yadav is definitely one of them. The chinaman spinner was struggling to bowl against Glenn Maxwell in the first ODI of the ongoing five-match series and was constantly being guided by Dhoni from behind the stumps. However, he did not pay much attention to Dhoni’s advise and ended up conceding 1 four and 3 sixes off four consecutive deliveries which gave the visitors a glimmer of hope to turn the match around.

Chasing a revised total of 164 in 21 overs, Australia were looking well out of the contest after huffing and puffing to 45 for 4 in 10 overs. However, the game became interesting when Maxwell decided to take on Kuldeep in the 11th over.

The Australia star missed the first ball of the 11th from Kuldeep while going for the switch-hit. Kuldeep followed it up by bowling a poor delivery down the leg side and was duly punished as Maxwell dispatched it for a boundary. In the meantime, Dhoni asked the spinner to toss the ball up and wide. However, the 22-year old ignored the tip from his senior teammate and bowled a tossed-up leg spinner on middle stump. The result- a huge six. Worried after conceding two consecutive boundaries and with Dhoni reiterating to bowl full and wide, the left-arm spinner bowled full but ended up bowling to the  middle stump line. It too went for a six and as the ball was travelling, Dhoni was quick to vent his frustration, saying:“Na, na, na. Isko itna aage nahi (Not this full too).”

Dhoni was also heard saying:“”Stump pe mat dal (don’t bowl in the line of the stumps) and Arre baahar daal, isko itna aage nahi (bowl wider (outside the off stump) and not this full).

The following delivery was also hit for a six, compelling Dhoni to run up to the inexperienced bowler and give him some tips.  Kuldeep ended his over with a googly and fortunately Maxwell failed to make any connection with it.

After paying a hefty price for not paying heed to Dhoni’s tips, Kuldeep saw his spin partner Yuzvendra Chahal dismissing Maxwell in the very next over with the same delivery that Dhoni was asking the left-arm spinner to bowl.

Chahal bowled three dots to Maxwell before bowling a middle-stump line and it resulted into a six. However, he followed Dhoni’s advise on the last ball and bowled one outside off. Maxwell ended up miscuing it and was caught at long-on, paving the way for India’s 26-run win.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
