One of the most picturesque countries in the world, Sri Lanka, has witnessed its fair share of bloodshed over the last few decades.

The Civil War between the Sinhalese and Tamil claimed many lives in recent years.

Just when the nation decided to celebrate their glorious history and 70 years of Independence, tragedy struck in the country in the form of an Emergency.

Before the commencement of the Nidahas Trophy, Buddhist rioters decided to attack mosques and Muslim-owned businesses.

Consequently, a state of emergency was imposed and the curfew extended, and authorities are blocking social media.

Sri Lankan stalwart, Kumar Sangakkara, took to social media, to deliver a powerful message to the Sri Lankan citizens. Sanga asked his people to stop racism and preached unity amongst it citizen

Have we learnt nothing from our recent past? Have we lost sight of basic human decency and love? Are we so morally corrupt that we cannot see how our mindless and thoughtless actions are endangering our common future?” questioned Kumar Sangakkara in his video.

We are responsible for the safety and well being of our neighbours. We are sister’s keepers and brother’s keepers. It is our responsibility to ensure that anyone and everyone in Sri Lanka is safe and secure,” explained Sanga.

It is the first time in seven years, Sri Lanka has imposed the measure. The country was under a state of emergency for nearly three decades when the government fought Tamil rebels in the civil war that ended in 2009.

Also, we have to open our minds and hearts open to one another. Together, we can end this mad cycle of racism of violence but we have to end it now. When I look into eyes of my Sri Lankan brother and sister, I don’t see a difference,” insisted the second highest run scorer in the game of cricket.

I don’t see a Sinhalese, a Muslim, a Tamil or a Berger. In fact, I see myself in them. Stand Together Stand Strong and say no to violence,” concluded Sangakkara.

Shadows loomed over the ongoing Nidahas Trophy a couple of days back since the news of the emergency broke down.

However, the action continued on the field of cricket, as Sri Lanka beat India by five wickets in the tournament opener.

No one in Sri Lanka can be marginalized or threatened or harmed due to their ethnicity or religion. We are One Country and One people. Love, trust and acceptance should be our common mantra. No place for racism and violence. STOP. Stand together and stand strong,” captioned Kumar Sangakkara’s powerful post.
