After a successful time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), young Prithvi Shaw is currently leading the North Mumbai Panthers in the ongoing T20 Mumbai League. For Shaw captaincy is not something new. He has led the Indian team to the U19 World Cup title in Australia and New Zealand. As he looks to grow as a skipper, Shaw admitted that working with Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly during the Indian Premier League was a learning curve for him.

IPL was a learning curve: Shaw

Delhi Capitals had a successful run in the recently concluded IPL despite ending one step away from the final. Prithvi Shaw forged an excellent opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan which laid the platform for the batters to follow. The 19-year-old, who only played his second IPL season, amassed 353 runs in 16 IPL games at a good strike-rate. The cricketer who hails from Mumbai revealed how Ricky Ponting – head coach of Delhi, and Sourav Ganguly – the advisor, helped him prepare mentally for challenges in the T20 format.

“They [Ponting and Ganguly] helped us prepare to be strong on tough occasions. Being a youngster and playing the IPL is huge. I would be nervous but they would always calm my nerves,” Shaw said during a press conference.

I love captaining teams: Shaw

Speaking about the added pressure of leading the side, Prithvi Shaw admitted he loves to lead from a very young age. He said that he tried to learn from how Shreyas Iyer – Delhi Capitals skipper, Ponting and Ganguly handled pressure during crunch moments. Under his leadership, Noth Mumbai Panthers have made a great start to the season winning two out two to seat at the second spot in the points table so far.

“I have always loved captaining teams right from a young age. I was captain of the Rizvi Springfield [Bandra] many years ago but this is totally different. It’s a big learning for me. There will be many pressure situations and I have watched and learnt at Delhi Capitals under Ricky [Ponting] sir, Sourav [Ganguly] sir and Shreyas Iyer how they handle pressure at the IPL. So, as a captain, I have to constantly keep thinking about how to handle pressure,” Shaw added.

Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw has already made his Test debut for India during the series against Windies last year. Unfortunately, he injured himself right before the start of the historic series against Australia and had to return without playing a match.
