Lungi Ngidi Ruled Out Of The Boxing Day Test Against England

The right-handed fast bowler of South Africa Lungi Ngidi once again sustained an injury ahead of the key clash. He will be unavailable for the Boxing Day Test against England after being diagnosed with a “significant Grade 1 hamstring muscle tear”. He will also be away from the final of the ongoing Mzansi Super League.

Ngidi suffered a “significant Grade 1 hamstring muscle tear” while warming up with his side Tshwane Spartans before the MSL playoff against Nelson Mandela Bay Giants in Port Elizabeth on Friday. Cricket South Africa’s chief medical officer, Shuaib Manjra revealed that scans on Ngidi’s hamstring showed a Grade 1 tear which will take at least a month to heal fully.

Lungi Ngidi sustained an acute hamstring muscle injury – Medical Officer

The last twelve months of Lungi Ngidi’s career marked with a series of injuries. He missed Indian Premier League 2019 with side strain before missing out a place in the home series against Sri Lanka. Though he was picked for ICC World Cup 2019, Lungi Ngidi missed quite a few games owing to injury again.

“Lungi Ngidi sustained an acute hamstring muscle injury during the warm-up prior to the MSL T20 play-off on Friday. Scans done on Saturday showed a significant Grade 1 tear of his hamstring muscle and therefore he has been ruled out of the MSL T20 final.

“He will commence his rehab and return to play program with the aim of getting him fit to play for the Titans in January 2020 and based on his progress, a decision will be made regarding his availability for selection for the Proteas team.”

The 23-year old had begun the MSL season intending to stay fit throughout the season, but will now face time out once again due to this latest hamstring injury. His last Test appearance came during South Africa’s tour of India, where he put in an underwhelming display in the final game of the three-match series.

England will play four Test matches in South Africa before locking horns in three-match ODI series against the same team. The tour will end with three T20I games which will start on February 12th and ends on February 16th.
