Mahela Jayawardene In Race To Be India's Next Head Coach - Reports

Former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene could be in the race for India’s next head coach role. Jayawardene is reported to apply for the coveted job along with former coach Gary Kirsten, Tom Moody and Virender Sehwag. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has invited fresh applications after the tenure of Ravi Shastri has come to a close after the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Mahela Jayawardene has a vast experience of coaching and his insights can be helpful for the Indian team. Jayawardene had commenced his coaching career in 2015 when he was appointed the batting consultant of England.

Jayawardene has a plethora of experience under his belt.

Subsequently, Jayawardene got the role of head coach of Mumbai Indians in 2016 as he replaced Ricky Ponting. Under the tutelage of Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians were able to get to glory in 2017 and 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League.

“Some of the candidates who are likely to apply for the post of the head coach are Gary Kirsten, Mahela Jayawardene, Tom Moody and Virender Sehwag,” the Financial Express reported.

Meanwhile, no former players have thus far applied for the role of the head coach. Former Karnataka batsman J Arun Kumar has applied for the role of batting consultant. Arun Kumar had also served the same role for Kings XI Punjab in the 2017 edition of the IPL.

The support staff contract is extended by 45 days.

On the other hand, the team management is headed by Ravi Shastri whereas Sanjay Bangar is the batting consultant. Bharat Arun takes care of the bowlers whereas R Sridhar is the fielding coach.
The Indian board has extended the contract of the think tank by 45 days and the final decision of the new support staff will be taken before the home series against the Proteas.
India’s next assignment is against the West Indies. Virat Kohli’s team will play three ODIs, as many T20Is and two Test matches on the Carribean tour.
