At a time when Australia star Steve Smith was garnering praise from all over for his remarkable batting and bravery, a member of the prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club decided to hurl verbal abuses at him. But it did not take long for the MCC to rightly eject the member from the famed Long Room at Lord’s for the disgraceful act.

The incident occurred when Steve Smith was walking from the field after making a brave 92. Smith had returned to the crease after a 40-minute break following the hit on the neck by Jofra Archer. Smith was batting on 80 when a fiery bouncer from Archer hit him on the neck. Smith fell down on the ground immediately before walking off the field unaided.

According to a report by The Cricketer, the unidentified member called Smith a “cheat and a disgrace” as the batsman made his way back to the Australia dressing room. This is the first time a member has been thrown out of the Lord’s pavilion as a result of misconduct.

The Lord’s crowd was divided on Smith on day four of the just-concluded second Ashes Test. While the majority hailed Smith for his extraordinary bravery and batting, there were few who booed him.

Smith, who was later ruled out of the Lord’s Test due to concussion, and David Warner have been booed by crowds ever since arriving in England in May ahead of the Cricket World Cup. The fans have been booing the duo for the ball-tampering scandal last year.  The boos from the crowd were roundly condemned by commentators including Shane Warne, Michael Vaughan, Mark Taylor and Ian Healy, the latter labelling it ‘disgusting’.

The second Test, meanwhile, ended in a thrilling draw as Australia held on to maintain their lead. Chasing 267, Australia ended on 154 for 6.
