Michael Hussey has heaped high praise on the current Indian captain Virat Kohli for the way he has forged a relationship with MS Dhoni, despite the fact that both are such towering personalities of Indian cricket.

There have been a lot of instances in cricket and other sports as well where a captain has deliberately kept the senior or more dominant personality our of the team in order to become the sole power center in the set-up.

But that has never been the case with Virat, who unlike other players, has never found the idol-like status of MS Dhoni as threatening.

“I think you got to give a lot of kudos to Virat Kohli, having someone like MS Dhoni still in the team who’s been, arguably, India’s most successful captain. Sometimes some people would find that threatening to still have that person in the team,” Michael Hussey said in an episode of chat show Sony Ten’s Pit Stop.

Virat Kohli took over the leadership reigns of the white-ball teams from MS Dhoni in early 2017 and one of the first things that he did was post on social media where he declared that Dhoni would always be his captain.

And, we saw that till the time Dhoni was in the team. Virat would seek advice from his mentor in crunch situations and sometimes we would see MS Dhoni virtually leading the team in the death overs, with Virat patrolling the boundary.

Michael Hussey also went on to pay a tribute to Virat for his willingness to keep learning from the likes of Dhoni.

“But I think that’s where you need to tip your hat to Virat and so you know he’s obviously got the personality to say ‘no, no I would like this guy around. I can learn from this guy, and he’s going to help me get down the better skipper and obviously have a better team’,” Hussey added.
