The last few months have been tough for Mitchell Santner in his professional career. He missed out playing for the champion side Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2018 and went on to miss international cricket for 9 months.

Meanwhile, he is all set to make a comeback on Saturday to play for Northern Knights in the Super Smash opener for the brand-new season. He will be up against Wellington Firebrands to come good for his side ahead of the limited overs series against Sri Lanka.

A piece of bone fell off – Mitchell Santner

The Kiwis all-rounder recollected the pain he went through during those tough days. He explained that a part of knee bone has fallen off, which made things pretty tough to get the surgery right. However, doctors were quite efficient in making things happen for the youngster.

Owing to the injury, Mitchell Santner missed out cricketing acting for 9 months. During the course, he represented Northern Knights A team in the Club level cricket. Despite all the issues, Chennai Super Kings retained him for IPL 2019.

“I remember one game, in Nelson, [the knee] swelled up a bit and another piece of bone fell off, that bone was floating around and it came out in quite an important spot, so they had to clean that up to try and repair the cartilage a bit,” said Santner, who featured in 17 Tests, 53 ODIs and 27 T2oIs before he picked up the injury, to stuff.co.nz.

Well, during the course, players like Ajaz Patel, Somerville has raised their ranks to cement their place in the side. Ish Sodhi also made rapid strides to make himself as a primary option for the unit in the limited overs format of the game.

However, it would be interesting to see whether Mitchell Santner will make things happen for him or not. A good season for Northern Knights will push selectors to pick him for India series if not for the series against Sri Lanka.
