Mithali Raj Explains How Her Grandparents Expressed Shock on Her Profession

There is not an iota of doubt about the fact that former Team India women’s skipper Mithali Raj is one of the veterans of the game. Her record speaks volumes of her credential.

Top-order batter Mithali is the highest run scorer in the 50-over format with 6,373 runs under her belt in 194 matches.

The right-handed batter is averaging an astonishing 50.18. It was during the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup against Australia that Mithali reached the 6,000-run mark. She has also scored 50 half-centuries and six centuries during her ODI career.

Mithali also became the first Indian to reach 2,000 runs in Twenty20 Internationals.

Recently during “Breakfast with the Champions” with anchor Gaurav Kapur, Mithali revealed that her main dream was to become a Bharatnatyam dancer.

Mithali’s mother also wanted her to be a dancer. However, her father had aspirations of her daughter to become a professional cricketer.

During the interview, she revealed many interesting details of her childhood while growing up as a cricketer.

“My mom wanted me to be a dancer. I started to dance much before I got into cricket, it was more of my choice, I wanted to be a dance. I enjoyed dancing and then cricket happened because of various reason,” Mithali maintained.

Mithali hails from a conservative family:

She revealed that in a conservative south Indian family like hers, cricket was never considered as a career option. Her grandparents couldn’t even believe that their granddaughter will become a cricketer.

Mithali stated her granny had said that with the cuts in her face nobody would marry her.

“From a Tamil family cricket was nowhere. Nobody played sport in my family. For my grandparents to accept that I was playing cricket that too with boys, go early in the morning and come back in the evening, got all tanned. I also have a couple of stitches on my face, they were like no one is going to marry her, she has cut all over the face,” Mithali explained during the show.

Mithali Raj likely to be back for the second ODI against Australia.

“My dad and my mom were like enemies. But my parents have cocooned me from everything. If I had to deal with it as a youngster, I wouldn’t have been as strong as I’ve turned out to be,” she further added.

The prominent face of Indian cricket Mithali also revealed that she would have never played T20I’s had Test cricket been regular for the women.

Interestingly, Mithali has only played 10 Tests in a career spanning for over 20 years.
