Mohammad Azharuddin Appointed Working President of Telangana Congress Party

Just ahead of the general elections in Telangana State, Congress Party has appointed the former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin to be the working president of Telangana Congress unit. The appointment was made on Friday Evening.

Previously, Mohammad Azharuddin has been a Lok Sabha member as an MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad in 2009, the same year in which he joined the Congress. However, this time, he is appointed as the president of the party in Telangana.

Announcing the news, the AICC General Secretary Ashok quoted the Congress President Rahul Gandhi has approved the appointment of Mohammad Azharuddin on Friday.

“Congress president Rahul Gandhi has approved the appointment of Mohammed Azharuddin. Ex-MP, as working president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee,” a statement from AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot said.

“I have been given a good post after 18 years. I am very happy. My house falls under the constituency. I want to serve the people there.” the former Member of Parliament, Mohammad Azharuddin quoted after taking the post.

Meanwhile, it is learnt from ToI reports that Congress has appointed the former cricketer in order to get the support of Muslim people in the state. It constitutes 14% of the population. Certainly, their preference would make a massive role in taking 40 seats out of the 119-seat assembly.

However, it would be interesting to see how things would pan out for the former cricketer. As of now, TRS party led by Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhar Rao looks strong contenders to win the elections. Meanwhile, there is a slight chance for Congress as well.
