Indian cricket team under the tutelage of Virat Kohli is riding high on confidence. Be it home or away, the team knows how to win games. Barring the last thirty nervous minutes in ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in England, everything went well for India. India have never lost even a single series since then and their development has turned into dominance with Virat Kohli in charge.

Recently, India beat West Indies in the T20I and ODI series, winning both the formats convincingly by 2-1 and ended the year on a good note. They recently announced the squad for upcoming home assignments in early January as they will take on Sri Lanka for three-match T20I series. The first T20I is scheduled to be played at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on January 5.

Panesar reveals reason behind Kohli’s success as captain

Meanwhile, England spinner Monty Panesar revealed the reason behind Virat Kohli’s success as captain. Panesar who last played for England six years ago said that Virat Kohli is picking the right bunch of players which is having a tremendous impact on the overall performance of the team.

“As long as India are winning, that’s the main thing. He (Kohli) has got options, hasn’t he? He can play finger-spin, he can play wrist-spin. It doesn’t really matter as long as they win. So I think he’s probably just picking the team on whoever is performing well. And then if they’re not performing that well, then he would pick another group of players. The reason that he’s doing well is that he knows he has a group of, let’s say, 15 to 20 players he can pick from. And he knows they will all perform well,” Panesar was quoted as saying by TOI.

When asked whether India can resemble the West Indies of the ’80s, Panesar said: “I think there’s an opportunity for India to do that. India can become as good as the teams in the ’80s and the Australia of the ’90s if they perform well away from India. They have started doing that. The maiden Test series win in Australia is one.”
