Ahmedabad – Gujarat’s financial capital and the largest city, will unveil a new state-of-the-art cricket stadium with a few months in December 2019 or January 2020. The enormous structure is a brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said Finance Minister Amit Shah.

The stadium will have a capacity of around 1.10 lakh people. The new stadium will replace Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium. The earlier stadium which saw the legendary Sunil Gavaskar score his 10,000th Test run had a capacity of 50,000.

Built over 65 acres on the banks of the River Sabarmati, where the original stadium stood, the new project includes – apart from the main stadium – two additional cricket fields of the same size. It also has a multi-sport facility catering to various other disciplines. Furthermore, the stadium will have a dedicated metro station, Olympic-sized swimming pools and a sports academy.

Speaking to TOI on the same, Amit Shah revealed that it has been a dream project of Narendra Modi. He also said that they are happy with how things have progressed and shaped up.

“This project is the vision of our Prime Minister. It was his dream that Gujarat, and India, should have a world-class infrastructure in cricket, a game that generates a billion inspirations across the country. We are happy with the way work has progressed and the way the stadium is coming up,” Shah said.

Global design firm Populous, the company that was behind the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and many other famous stadiums have worked on the Motera Stadium. Amit Shah, who is also the Gujarat Cricket Association President, said that it will be a proud moment for Indian cricket. The venue is likely to host the final of the 2023 World Cup.

“In some months from now, the work will reach its completion and I am sure it will be a moment of pride for India and Indian cricket. The best expertise was sought on planning this entire project. Cricket in India is more than just a sport. It is an emotion,” Shah concluded.
