Former South African batsman and coach of India and South African cricket team, Gary Kirsten is of the opinion that the captaincy style of former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the current captain Virat Kohli are totally different.

Kirsten who was the coach of the Indian team when Virat Kohli started making giant strides in international cricket under his mentorship. There is no doubt about the fact that the Kirsten is eagerly looking forward to coach the Royal Challengers Bangalore where Kohli is the skipper.

“He (Virat) is a superstar who is determined to perform every time he walks onto the field,” Kirsten was quoted as saying by the Ahmedabad Mirror. Comparing Virat Kohli’s captaincy with MS Dhoni, Kirsten said,

“Virat is vastly different as captain from MS Dhoni but equally effective.”

Kirsten also felt India needed an extra batsman to counter the pace attack of the Proteas.

“Batting is traditionally tough in the South African conditions, so the more the batsmen, the better (it is),” the former India coach said.

“I have always believed that a Test match team should contain as many specialists as possible in it. Whilst taking 20 wickets allows a team to win games, scoring enough runs will always keep a team in the game,” he added.

The current form has been taken into consideration, and India’s regular Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane got overlooked for the first two Test despite having an exceptional overseas record.

“I’m not sure what the right selection is but to be successful in South Africa requires a certain type of technique and resilience. Those types of players are crucial in South Africa,” he remarked.

Kirsten was an instrumental figure in shaping Indian cricket during his tenure as a coach of the Indian team from 2008-2011. His last assignment was India’s famous World Cup victory in 2011. It was also under Dhoni and Kirsten that India reached the numero uno status for the first time in Test cricket.
