The way MS Dhoni started his international career, not many would have thought that he would go on to become an all-time great. MS Dhoni had an unorthodox technique as a batsman and a wicketkeeper. And while he did not take long to prove his batting abilities, he did struggle to impress behind the stumps early on.

But with the passage of time, he went on to become one of the best wicketkeeper-batsman in the world thanks to his hard work. In a recent interview, former Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More recalled how MS Dhoni had some issues when he started out but worked very hard to overcome all of them.

“We saw the talent in him. But his ability to work hard and improve made him what he is. He had some problems when he started out. Questions were asked about his wicket-keeping skills. However, he worked very hard on his game and kept getting better with every game,” More told indiatoday.in.

MS Dhoni went on to completely redefine the role of a wicketkeeper in the team. Before him, the wicketkeepers were all about being good behind the stumps and a handy batsman. However, MS Dhoni changed it all for good. He is one of the most decorated wicketkeeper-batsman in the history of the game.

With the bat, he is one of the very players in the history of the game who have scored more than 10,000 runs in ODIs. In Tests, he has scored nearly 5,000 runs while in T20Is, he has more than 1,600 runs.

More further added that when MS Dhoni started playing Test cricket, he realised that there were many things he needs to work upon to do well as a wicketkeeper. More, who was also a part of the selection panel, also said that the selectors wanted to give MS Dhoni a long rope.

“He played one-days and then went on to play Test cricket. Test cricket came up with a lot of challenges. He realized he had to do a lot of hard work to play Test cricket and that helped his wicketkeeping skills. We wanted to give him more chances. You can’t judge a player from just 3-4 games,” More said.

More also commented on the future of the 38-year old. MS Dhoni’s future in international cricket has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. He has not played a single competitive game since the end of the World Cup last July. He was later dropped by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from the annual contracts list.

“He has not played international cricket for quite some time. It’s difficult for selectors to look at him and make a call. He has to now come out and say what he is going to do. However, MS Dhoni has always played his cricket with responsibility. He knows when to make a call and he will make a call when the time comes. We should respect his decision at the moment,” More said.

Dhoni was expected to finally return in action during the IPL. However, the tournament is currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. The IPL was scheduled to start from March 29.
