It is reported that MS Dhoni is asked not to retire by the team management until rookie wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant gets well trained. Pant is still a novice at the International level and he still needs to learn a lot. On the other hand, it was earlier speculated that Dhoni would soon hang his boots from the white ball format.

However, Dhoni has himself put his retirement on hold and he made himself unavailable for selection for the West Indies tour. In fact, Dhoni has taken a two months break to join the paramilitary force.

Dhoni’s future?

On the other hand, Rishabh Pant has grabbed his opportunities with both hands in the Test format. However, he is yet to deliver the goods in the white-ball format. In fact, Pant’s temperament to bat with patience is yet to be tested as the southpaw can throw away his wicket despite a good start.

“Dhoni knows what his role and position is. All these talks about his retirement and when he will call it quits make no sense as he is a team player. He will never react to any controversy and I am sure you all know this much about the man and his ethics. “While the team management is grooming Pant with an eye on the next T20 World Cup and beyond, they want Dhoni as a mentor and back-up if he is needed going into the tournament.

The source close to IANS stated that MS Dhoni‘s presence is still needed in the team to groom the next generation. Dhoni has all the experience under his belt and if he leaves, it is going to create a huge void in the team. Thus, the team management is hopeful that Pant gets to play more under the tutelage of MS Dhoni so that he can learn more from the legend.

Dhoni’s presence is still needed.

“Take a look around and tell me who are your options if Pant suffers an injury? To be honest, all the names on the other side don’t match-up to be half as good as Dhoni still is. Yes, there is no denying the fact that Pant is the future and he will be looked at across all formats, but Dhoni’s guidance, as well as presence, is still needed,” the source stated.

MS Dhoni knows his game better than anyone else. The former skipper is not anymore at the top of his game and his power-hitting abilities are on the wane. The World Cup is done and dusted and it would be interesting to notice Dhoni’s decision.
