The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take a call on forming the new Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) as well as appointing a new selection panel only after the Supreme Court hears its plea on amending some of the key Lodha reforms in January. According to PTI, the BCCI top brass is in no hurry to take the big decisions as they await the decision of the apex court.

Earlier, the BCCI in its plea asked for relaxation in the ‘cooling off’ period. As per current rules, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will have to demit office after nine months due to the mandatory Cooling-Off’ period. As per the current constitution, which is approved by the Supreme Court, an office-bearer who has served two three-year terms either at the BCCI or at the state association, goes into a compulsory cooling-off for a three-year period.

The BCCI, however, wants the cooling-off period to kick in after the individual has finished two terms (six years), at the board and state association separately. The BCCI also wants to amend the clause that requires the court’s approval for any amendment in the constitution.

“It is unlikely that the CAC will be formed before the Supreme Court hearing in January. So naturally, the selection committee might also take some time to form. It is still not clear whether the new selection committee or the existing one will pick the squad for the marquee New Zealand tour,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

MSK Prasad & Co. to work further:

With the BCCI now looking set to await for Supreme Court’s decision, the MSK Prasad-led committee is more than likely to select the squad for the three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, starting January 5. This development comes just days after Sourav Ganguly himself confirmed that the tenure of the current selectors has come to an end.

“Tenures are finished. You cannot go beyond tenure. They have done a good job,” Ganguly had said after the BCCI’s 88th Annual General Meeting. “We will fix a term for selectors and it is not right to appoint selectors every year.”

Ganguly’s statement made it clear that the BCCI decided to go by the old constitution of the governing body which had mandated a cap of 4 years. The new constitution proposes for a maximum five-year term for the selection committee.
