MSK Prasad, chief of India’s selection panel, has given an update on fast-bowler Deepak Chahar’s injury. The pacer recently suffered a back injury and missed the third and final ODI against West Indies. He was replaced in the team by Navdeep Saini as the latter went on to make his ODI debut. The injury would be a big setback for Deepak Chahar as he had almost sealed his place in the T20I team.

He has been a regular feature in Team India’s limited-overs squad after the World Cup. Last month, he was all over the news for blowing away Bangladesh in the third T20I in Nagpur, thus helping India win the match and clinch the series. He had picked up 6 for just 7 runs as India beat Bangladesh by 30 runs to win the series.

That spell against Bangladesh also included a hat-trick. Just a couple of days after that sensational performance, he picked up another hat-tick, this time for Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He achieved the feat against Vidarbha. The pace star finished with figures of 4 for 18 in 3 overs which included a hat-trick and a maiden over.

MSK Prasad on Deepak Chahar:

Deepak Chahar is looking set to miss the remainder of the ongoing international season. MSK Prasad has confirmed that the bowler is unlikely to return to action before March or April. Consequently, he has not been named in the team for the T20I series against Sri Lanka and ODI series against West Indies. He is also set to miss the tour of New Zealand.

“I have my own doubts about Deepak Chahar till March-April,” Prasad told reporters after announcing the squads.

Prasad added that India have their back-up ready to replace the injured pacer as far as the forthcoming series with Australia and Sri Lanka are concerned.

“We have enough back-ups ready across all formats across all disciplines so Indian cricket need not worry for 6-7 years,” he said.
