India’s former chief selector MSK Prasad in a recent interview discussed the prospect of the split captaincy of the Indian team between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. By far, various cricketing nations nowadays have different skippers in different formats — to ease the burden instead of piling up pressure on just one player.

While other teams have been successfully implementing this formula, it won’t be happening in India any time soon, in the opinion of Prasad. While Indian skipper Kohli has been a good leader — his recent slump has raised questions on his ability, to lead the Indian team.

Hence, there has been a lot of talk surrounding Rohit, who has a decent record in limited-overs, and perhaps it’s the right time to divide the burden — of captaincy between the two of them.

The former chief selector, who has now paved the way for former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi, refused to pick one captain between Virat and Rohit.

“Virat has led the team extremely well for the past few years, with a very high percentage of success across all formats. Having said that, Rohit also holds a good record in the limited opportunities he had in leading the team,” Prasad was quoted as saying per the Indian Express.

The 44-year-old was also asked about Virat’s recent slump and Rohit’s excellent record in limited-overs. However, he insisted that players go through difficult phases in cricket and that captaincy should not be associated with a player’s individual form.

The 31-year-old Kohli had a nightmare of a series in New Zealand where he could manage just one fifty across the three formats.

Virat’s critics had thus asked for him to step aside and let Rohit lead the Indian team, just like he’s led Mumbai Indians (MI) with incredible success in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, Prasad hit back at Virat’s critics while saying that his track record speaks for itself.

“I don’t think it is appropriate to talk about Virat’s form and attribute it to his captaincy, as he was outstanding across formats for the last three years. You cannot pinpoint his failure in only one series, which he had in the last few years. After all, he is human and this kind of average series will happen in one’s career,” said Prasad.
