Justice Mukul Mudgal, who was one of the most integral figures in the IPL spot-fixing row, has come forward to support the legalization of sports betting in India. Mukul Mudgal headed the team that initiated an enquiry on the IPL spot-fixing controversy that erupted back in 2013. The alleged cricketers involved in the same were S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, and Ajit Chandila.

Sports betting stands illegal in India despite which there remains an extensive amount of unlawful gambling in the country. The Indian Supreme court has adjudged sports betting as verboten except for horse races. Nevertheless, Mukul Mudgal has enlisted the benefits of legalizing it and how the government would be at an advantage if it happens.

Mukul Mudgal revealed that in the Mudgal Committee report, all of them recommended for sports betting to be legalized and underlined the reasons for it. Mudgal said that one is black money and the funds go to the underworld and that all sports bodies have programs involving suspicious betting.

In the Mudgal Committee report, all 3 of us recommended that sports betting should be legalised and there were reasons for it. One – all the money is black money. Two – the money goes to the underworld. All the sports bodies have programs where you can come to know of suspicious betting,” Mukul told Sportskeeda.

Mukul continued saying that on removing restrictions from betting, the government will receive enormous revenue and they can charge tax on it, owing to which the money becomes white. He added that it would be a massive call if the authority legalizes it, benefitting sports, public, and the government.

Legalise betting, the government will get enormous revenue. Also, appoint a gaming commission to control betting, and it’s all white – you tax it. The white money comes into the mainstream. It’s a big call but if the government do take it, it’ll benefit sports, it’ll benefit the public, and it’ll benefit the government enormously,” the retired judge added.
