Head coach of the Mumbai Indians, Mahela Jayawardene has said that they will try to use the trading window before next year’s IPL as it is difficult to scout players owing to the circumstances created by the coronavirus.

By defeating Delhi Capitals in the final of IPL 2020, Mumbai Indians clinched their fifth IPL trophy, and successfully defended their champions tag. Mumbai Indians is known for their smart moves over the years in the trading window and at the auction table and has unearthed some phenomenal talents with the help of their scouting system.

We have trading windows to boost our squad: Mahela Jayawardene

While speaking to Sky Sports, Mahela Jayawardene understands that it is difficult to travel and scout players this time during the pandemic era. Also, as it is being reported that the IPL 2021 might take place in April, so there is less time to do the planning for the MI head coach.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mahela Jayawardene said,“Usually we have time to do our camps and go through the scouting and find new talented players and see new areas to improve in the squad. But unfortunately, with the pandemic, we don’t have that much time to do that much planning.”

The 43-year-old said that there is no certainty whether the next auction will be a mega auction or a small one. Earlier, a mega-auction was supposed to happen for IPL 2021, but since there is less time to plan, the franchises have requested a mini-auction.

The Sri Lankan said he has been in touch with the owners throughout the year and they are hoping to utilize the trading windows they will get before the IPL next year to boost their squad even further. Jayawardene, who has won three IPL trophies with MI as a coach, believes it is important to keep updating their team and have good options in the squad.

“We are still unsure about whether we will have a small or big auction. We keep in touch with owners and franchises over 12 months. Fortunately, we have two-three trading windows so we will see how we can boost our squad and do stuff because every year you need to develop and have different options,” Mahela Jayawardene added.
