It is a known fact that Mumbai is one of the worst-affected cities during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic situation. Amid that, the city’s municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal has shut down the news of Wankhede and Brabourne Stadiums coming in utility for quarantine facilities. And they revealed the reason for the same. On Sunday, the Indian government extended the lockdown till the end of May with few curbs that came into effect on the 25th of March. However, sports can resume without the public.

Chahal was baffled at the news of the two grounds understood to be used as isolation centres since the monsoon season is lingering and that having open grounds for patients is impossible. Due to the heavy showers, it is only going to get muddy, and the subsequent flooding would only increase the chances of infection.

He went on to claim that they are in talks with the authorities at private hospitals to add more beds. Reportedly, one lakh bed facilities are already available while Chahal also suggested that parking lots, malls, and airports could be opted for if needed.

Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut also backed this move; however, the Maharashtra Cabinet was against it. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey also pointed out that rains would be a big concern that needs to be considered before planning for quarantine facilities.

“I have no idea how this news about Wankhede came about as there are rains expected soon in the city. Having an open ground for patients is not possible. With rains it is only going to be muddy. If it gets flooded then taking up ground can not be a good option. We are not taking any stadium for construction of quarantine facility.

We already have 1 lakh beds facility that is being done up without the use of any stadium. It will be better to take up parking lots, malls, airports and there is land in Aarey that can be taken up if needed.” Chahal said as quoted by India Today.
