As Bangladesh U19 team created history by winning the ICC U19 World Cup for the first time in their history, Mushfiqur Rahim did not take long to react to the news. The young Tigers sprung a surprise to beat defending champions and firm favourites India by three wickets.

Bangladesh remained on top of the proceedings right from the start before a mini collapse put them in a spot of bother. However, captain Akbar Ali played an unbeaten knock of 43 to take his team home in a thrilling manner. Asked to bat first, India were all out for just 177.

Barring in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal who scored 88, none of the other batsmen managed to do well. In fact, India lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs to be bundled for a below par score. At 103 for 1 and then 156 for 3, the defending champions were well on their way to post close to 250.

However, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal in the 40th over opened the floodgates and India were all out for just 177. For Bangladesh, Avishek Das was the pick of the bowlers, picking up three wickets for 40 runs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Shoriful Islam also impressed with the ball, picking up two wickets apiece.

In reply, Bangladesh were off to a flying start with their openers adding 50 runs for the first wicket. However, Ravi Bishnoi revived India’s hopes by taking four wickets in quick succession to reduce Bangladesh to 65 for 4. At one stage, Bangladesh were reeling at 102 for 6. But their captain Akbar Ali held his nerve well and made sure to take the team over the line.

And as soon as the game ended, a delighted Mushfiqur Rahim took to Twitter to congratulate his compatriots. The Bangladesh star was all proud as he pointed out Akbar for special praise, writing:

“Alhamdulillah .Ma shaa Allah tigers ….Feeling so proud???big congratulations to our captain Akbar and his team ??????”
