Former India cricketer turned politician, Navjot Singh Sidhu has suggested cricket matches could get played between winning franchises of Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

There has hardly been any cricket involving the two nations apart from the World Cup and Asia Cup. The suggestion could be the way forward in reintroducing India-Pakistan bilateral ties. Atleast playing franchises from IPL and PSL will be the right way forward in the resumption of Indo-Pak bilateral ties.

“Cricket takes us to a whole new level,” Sidhu said before leaving for Lahore after attending Prime Minister Imran Khan’s oath-taking ceremony in Islamabad.

“A match between the winning team of the IPL and PSL is a good idea,” he added.

The flamboyant commentator stated resumption of bilateral ties between the two countries could bring them together.

The former cricketer further added that this particular trip to Pakistan will be memorable and will be etched in his memories for the rest of his life. He called the trip a “new beginning”.

“I hope I have laid the foundations and someone will work on it,” he added.

However, Pakistan’s recently appointed Prime Minister Imran Khan had invited Sidhu to his oath-taking ceremony. Imran had also requested the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev to grace the occasion.

However, both of them denied the proposal and didn’t visit the oath-taking ceremony. The ceremony took place on Saturday. The former Indian opener presented a shawl to the newly appointed Prime Minister. Sidhu also had a brief interaction with Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa during the ceremony.

Later, Sidhu was criticized from all quarters for attending the party. He was bound to face flak from some quarters. However, we should respect his move, as we also want the relationship between the two countries to improve.

Pakistan last toured India for three ODI’s and a couple of T20I’s back in 2012. Pakistan returned triumphantly in the ODI series while the T20I series got levelled.
