Since the inception of International Twenty20 matches 13 years ago, the biggest debate has been the workload this format imposes on the players and the staff in general. Cricket has gained immense popularity in the last decade and the credit should be given to T20 cricket.

However, as much as the fans have enjoyed the format, the players have had to work harder in order stay fit. New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has defended international T20 cricket while speaking about it thoroughly.

Black Caps lost to England by two runs in the sixth match of the T20 tri-series. However, managed to qualify for the final on run rate. The Kiwis won just one match in the round-robin stage.

On the other hand, England also won just a solitary match. He failed to qualify for the final to be played on Wednesday (February 21).

England’s coach Trevor Bayliss has raised his concern over the players’ burnout and staff members. He believes they have to face a lot to cope up with T20 cricket.

Kiwi coach, Mike Hesson said, “There’s always a workload issue, I think that’s fair, but there’s also a revenue generation issue. In some countries that’s not as big a deal but for New Zealand Cricket, to get 35,000 people to Eden Park is huge for us, huge for the game and huge for the promotion of the game.”

Hesson also disagreed with the fact that T20 fixtures were meaningless, “Too right they are. You’ve got guys that only play T20 and that’s their chance to play international cricket, so I think absolutely it’s meaningful.”

The debate was raised when Bayliss suggested that the officials could ease international fixture congestion by leaving T20 to domestic competitions.

“I wouldn’t play T20 internationals, I’d just let the franchises play. If we continue putting on so many games there’ll be a certain amount of blowout, not just players but coaches as well,” Hesson concluded.
