New Zealand’s Debutant Glenn Phillips Shocks Everyone Turning Steve Smith’s Replica

New Zealand batsman Glenn Phillips, who made his debut in the ongoing Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground is already drawing comparisons from Australia’s Steve Smith. Phillips scored a fighting half-century as the Kiwis produced their best batting performance so far in the three-match series.

Smith has a unique and complex batting technique. Constant movement of the bat during bowler’s run-up followed up by an open-up stance is the characteristics of Smith. While almost everyone thought it is hard to copy Steve Smith, Glenn Phillips has defied all those and came up with a similar stance that made people on social media call him Smith’s clone.

Kiwis have found Smith’s clone in Glenn Phillips

“There’s a bit of Steve Smith in his technique”, Shane Warne said on Fox Cricket.

“I’m a fan, and he’s two not out”, added Kerry O’Keeffe, before addressing the similarities between Smith and Phillips. “The big backlift, covering sixth stump, working to leg from outside off,” he added.

If that technique serves Glenn Phillips nearly as well as it has to Steve Smith in the last decade, then New Zealand will be a force to reckon with in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Glenn Phillips produced a fighting knock as he scored 52 runs before Pat Cummins got the better of him. However, he was lucky on his way to the first fifty getting two lives and then was recalled when James Pattinson bowled a no-ball.

Australia currently lead by 243 runs with the openers adding 40 runs for no loss at the end of the day’s play. They will hope to secure a big lead and then bowl out New Zealand to inflict a whitewash.
