Ravichandran Ashwin has lavished praise on Dinesh Karthik after the latter took India over the line in a pulsating Nidahas Trophy final on Sunday.

Chasing 167, India were staring down the barrel after Mustafizur Rahman conceded only 1 run off the 18th over. That miserly over had left India with an uphill task as they needed 34 off last two overs. However, a whirlwind knock from Dinesh Karthik helped India win the game in style.

Rubel Hossain, who had picked 2/13 in three overs, came on to bowl the penultimate over. And what followed left one and all mighty stunned. Karthik got off the mark by blasting a low full toss over long on for six and followed it up with a powerful blow to long on for four. The batsman sent out another length ball over deep mid wicket for his second six and ended the over with a scoop to the fine leg fence. With 22 runs coming off Bangladesh’s best bowler, India’s hopes were revived.

Soumya Sarkar then came to defend 12 runs in the last over. And it looked he had done his job when he dismissed Vijay Shankar on the fifth ball as India needed 5 off the last delivery. However, Karthik launched a stunning shot over sweeper cover for his third six to seal the match in thrilling style. Karthik scored 29* off 8 with the help of two fours and three sixes.

Karthik has received widespread praise for his knock and Ashwin has also joined the bandwagon.

“What an unbelievable knock from @DineshKarthik last night, knowing him well this was something that he always wanted to do and it came through on the finals night. ?”
