India skipper Virat Kohli was a delighted man after his team thrashed South Africa by an innings and 137 runs in the second Test at Pune. With the win, the hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. South Africa proved no match for the formidable hosts as India made light work of the visitors.

Skipper Virat Kohli led the way by scoring a sublime unbeaten double century in the first innings of the match, helping India post a mammoth total of 601 for 5 (declared). In reply, South Africa were all out for 275. India then did not hesitate in enforcing the follow-on on the fourth day after taking a huge 326-run lead.

In reply, South Africa once again faltered with the bat and were all out for just 189. The writing was very much on the wall after they lost their first five wickets for just 79 runs. At one stage it looked like South Africa would not even manage to touch the 150-mark. But the lower-order batsmen provided some much-needed resistance to provide some respectability to the total.

Speaking at the end of the game, Virat Kohli spoke on how he approaches the game. The right-handed batsman said that scoring big is a byproduct of inculcating a mindset of helping the team.

“It’s about getting the responsibility back of being a captain (on scoring the double-hundred). The mindset is always to help the team and in that process, the big scores come. I think the moment you start thinking about the team, all the pressure goes away. I am at a stage at my career where I am happy to play for my team. Putting the team in a commanding position is the only goal,” said Virat Kohli.

He further praised his teammates before making it clear that the team would not get carried away with the recent wins.

“It’s been a natural progress to have a calm mindset over the years. I have a good understanding at that and hence the muted celebration. You have to look forward to playing against the new ball. I enjoy batting with Jinks (Rahane), we run well between the wickets. We are the most successful Indian pair. Having him at the other end, keeps you focussed. The good thing is when we started, we were at number 7. The only way was up. We are all lucky to have this group of players. It’s amazing to see that hunger for all the guys to keep improving. Saha was back to his best. Ashwin has stepped up beautifully and it’s guys willing to work hard. It’s been nice and looking at the larger picture – the Test Championship, every game has a value. No-one’s going to relax from here,” concluded Virat Kohli.
