England have left out their Test captain Joe Root of the T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa in February. The reigning 50-over world champions have also given maiden call-ups to the ODI squad to Pat Brown, Tom Banton, Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson. England will play a full-fledged series in South Africa with the Test series starting the tour on Boxing Day.

Joe Root seems to have fallen down the pecking order in T20Is. He was rested for the five-match T20I tour of New Zealand last month as England opted to try out some new faces after a hectic summer for the big names. But while other big names have been recalled for the series against Proteas, Joe Root continues to remain out of the T20I side.

Dawid Malan’s form might have prompted England to leave out Root. Malan, who currently averages 57.25 in T20Is, made a big mark in New Zealand. On the same tour, Malan had scored an unbeaten century too. The likes of Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow as well as captain Eoin Morgan are higher in the pecking order too.

Malan, meanwhile, has also been selected in the 50-over squad. Having played just one ODI so far, the left-handed batsman will be keen to impress in ODIs too. The ODI series will start from February 4 while the T20Is will start on February 12.
