The conundrum surrounding Shreyas Iyer continues to baffle many. Despite being one of the most impressive performers in domestic cricket for more than a couple of years now, the Mumbai star is yet to get his due in international cricket. India have given him chances but only in bits and pieces. The highly-rated batsman is yet to get an extended run in the Indian team.’

What is more baffling is that India have not tried him out much despite their middle-order being a weak link. Iyer is being seen by many as a potential candidate to end India’s number four woes. India have tried a handful of batsmen in the last couple of years but are yet to get the desired result. However, Iyer is not hellbent on batting at only number four.

Ahead of the second ODI, the right-handers said he does not want to stick to a particular number in the batting line up. Iyer, who is yet to bat on the ongoing tour, said that he wants to be as flexible as possible.

“Personally I am not thinking about batting only at number four but I want to be like someone who is very flexible batting at any number,” Shreyas Iyer told reporters ahead of the second ODI against West Indies.

He further said that it all depends on the management’s decision regarding who plays at number four and he has no say in the matter.

“We have no idea, it is totally management’s decision. It is not upon me, I cannot go and say ‘I want to bat on number four’ and they will put me in that spot,” he said.

India, on Sunday, will be looking to take an unassailable lead in the three-match ODI series. The first game was called off due to bad weather and a win in the second game will give India an unassailable lead. Iyer said the team is confident of continuing its winning run after whitewashing West Indies in the three-match T20I series.

“We won the T20I series and the momentum is always on our side. The way the team is playing currently, it is totally amazing. If one doesn’t perform, the next one raises his hand and he takes the responsibility to take the team through and this is what has been happening throughout the year,” said Shreyas Iyer.
