Nottinghamshire Batsman Greg Smith Announces Retirement At 28

After Michael Lumb’s unexpected retirement, Greg Smith, his Nottinghamshire teammate, has also followed suit by taking a shocking retirement from the game at just 28. The club, while confirming the news on Thursday (July 20), said that the batsman has called time on his career with immediate effect to pursue a career outside of the game. The club confirmed that Smith’s unexpected decision came after he played only four senior matches during the 2017 season.

The 28-year old came through the junior set up at Leicestershire and topped the first-class national batting averages in 2010. However, after two Championship seasons in Division Two without a win, a disappointed Smith left  his childhood club for Nottinghamshire.

“I’d like to thank everyone associated with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club for making it such an enjoyable few years,” Smith said. “It feels like the right time for me to move on from cricket. I’ll leave the game having met some incredible people and with some amazing memories.

“I’m sure, with the quality within the current squad, Nottinghamshire will continue to enjoy plenty of success in the years to come,” he added.

Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire director of cricket, also respected Smith’s decision and wished him well for his future endeavours.

“It’s sad to see Greg leave the club, but he’s found it a struggle to get into the first-team this season and we respect that he now considers he is ready to begin a new chapter in his life,” Newell said.

“He has played some important innings in his time with us, particularly in white ball cricket. We wish him every success in whatever he chooses to do next,” he added.

The former England Under-19 star bowed out of the game after scoring 4963 first-class runs and over 1100 runs each in List A and T20s. Earlier this week, Nottinghamshire opener Michael Lumb also retired with immediate effect due to an ankle injury.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
