Nuwan Zoysa Charged Under ICC's Anti-Corruption Code

International Cricket Council (ICC) have provisionally charged former Sri Lanka cricketer and bowling coach Nuwan Zoysa with three counts of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, the body said on October 31 (Wednesday).

Meanwhile, they are yet to reveal the specifics regarding the charge. However, ICC have charged Nuwan Zoysa with three offenses under Article 2.1.1, 2.1.4 and 2.4.4 of its code. The charges relate to:

  • ‘being party to an effort to fix or contrive or to otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspects of an International match.’

  • ‘directly soliciting, inducing, enticing or encouraging a player to breach Code Article 2.1.1’ and

  • ‘failing to disclose to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in corrupt conduct.’

Zoysa, who played 30 Tests and 95 ODIs for Sri Lanka during 1997-2007, has 14 days from 1 November 2018 to respond to the charges.

Previously, former Sri Lankan captain and chairman of selector Sanath Jayasuriya had also been charged with two counts of breaching the ICC’s Anti-corruption Code. The charges related to “failure or refusal to cooperate with” and “obstructing or delaying” any investigation carried out by the ACU.

Nuwan Zoysa, during his stint with the national side, has picked 64 Tests and 108 ODI wickets. Moreover, he also formed a dangerous pair with Sri Lanka legend Chaminda Vaas and was a threat to many during those days.
