Former England captain Andrew Strauss has shown faith in batsman Ollie Pope and said that he can succeed in all the formats. The confidence shown by Strauss in Pope comes after cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar applauded the batsman for his impressive display of batting via a tweet.
Ollie Pope, batting on 91 on Day 1, as he was dismissed early on the second day by Shannon Gabriel. However, his knock on the first day, displayed resilience as he took on the West Indies bowling with ease. Strauss believes that Pope has proved that he can do well in the longest format as he played some really eye-catching shots.
“If you look at his first-class record, he’s averaging 57 and he’s proved that he can do it in Test cricket with that great innings he played in South Africa,” Strauss told ‘Sky Sports’.
“Today was more of the same. He’s a guy who can score quickly without you really noticing it. He played some really eye-catching shots as well and he looks equally comfortable against seam and spin, so no obvious weaknesses there. He’s a real find for England, I think,” Strauss added.
Pope averages nearly 40 in the longest format of the game. He also has three half centuries to his name.
Pope broke into the national team after some terrific domestic performances. He averages over 57 in First-Class cricket and has nine centuries and 10 half-centuries to his name.
